WOMEN MARTYRS IN ACTION

RE-ENACTING MEDIEVAL HEROINES TODAY

research-creation: contemporary challenges in medieval religious theatre

A postdoctoral research and creation project led by Susanna Scavello, an FNS grant holder, Women Martyrs in Action aims to explore the social, ethical and artistic impact of the hagiographic theatrical corpus in Middle French and Provençal, focusing on the figures of female martyrs (Saint Barbara and Saint Agnes).

Based on practical experimentation within academic (at UNIL and ArTeC/UPN) and professional (tests on acting and staging with Jeanne Styx, Les Éperdues and Bougier TOTO), the research aims to develop experimental protocols and a theoretical framework to revive these forgotten medieval plays on today’s stages, as they resonate with our contemporary world.

Educational workshops in collaboration with Bougier TOTO:

  • May 2025 – STUDY ON THE PLAY ‘SAINT AGNES’: The dimension of the miraculous

FNS, UPN – ACA2, EUR ArTec (ArTec Innovative Pedagogical Module, MIP)

  • November 2024 - MARTYRS OR STRONG WOMEN? A creative research project on heroines of the medieval stage

FNS, UNIL - (Creative Research Workshop in Performing Arts, ARCHAS)

  • January–October 2024 - REBELLIOUS VOICES AND BODIES: Re-enacting medieval heroines today, the case of Barbara

UPN - ACA2, EUR ArTec (ArTec Innovative Pedagogical Module, MIP)

Susanna Scavello

Following a joint PhD (Università di Bologna–Université de Picardie Jules Verne) defended in 2021 and devoted to female heroism in hagiographic theatre from the 10th to the 16th centuries (in Latin, French, Provençal and Italian), Susanna Scavello undertook a postdoctoral project at EUR ArTeC (Université Paris Nanterre) on the five-day Mystery of Saint Barbara (15th century). This project enabled her to lay the foundations for an original research-creation methodology aimed at the linguistic and performative updating of the medieval mystery, which she will refine during her current SNSF project. Qualified in Sections 9 and 18 of the CNU (French and Theatre), she has taught comparative literature, medieval literature and the history of theatre at the universities of Amiens, Paris Nanterre and Paris 8.

PUBLIC RESEARCH

January - April 2026

A Franco-Swiss professional theatre workshop aimed at staging a theatrical performance based on the *Mystère* corpus, developed through collaboration between performers and directors.

Directed by Susanna Scavello in collaboration with a team of actors and directors and a composer of electroacoustic music, Women Martyrs in Action. Sainte Barbe presents the outcome of a study into the contemporary staging of the Mystery of Saint Barbara over five days (14th–15th centuries). Emerging from a process of adapting the text into modern language and experimenting on stage with this previously unperformed dramatic material, the performance reveals the complexity of this female figure.

The performance took place on 2 April 2026 at the Théâtre Universitaire de La Grange (Lausanne, Switzerland) as part of a research day.

Directed and performed by: Jules Benveniste, Violetta Latte, Angèle Arnaud, Mathilde Morel

Sound desing: Paul Goutmann

Scientific and dramaturgical supervision: Susanna Scavello

A CREATIVE RESEARCH PROJECT ON HEROINES OF THE MEDIEVAL STAGE

MARTYRS OR STRONG WOMEN ?

08 - 09 November 2024

Masterclass on the educational experimentation project conducted as part of ARCHAS (Creative Research Workshop in the Performing Arts) 2024, organised by Estelle Doudet and Susanna Scavello, UNIL – University of Lausanne.

“Saint Barbara, patron saint of Fribourg, was the most frequently portrayed female martyr in the Middle Ages. How can we understand the fascination of audiences in the past with the story of a young believer who spoke out to assert herself and faced her tormentors ‘like a man’, before being killed by her own father? In the wake of #MeToo and at a time when studies and debates on gender-based violence within the family and society are multiplying, is it possible to stage such a play again, and if so, how and why? Giving voice to a dissident femininity and knowing how to listen (or not) to this difference within social frameworks governed by power relations and gender domination: Atelier 2024 invites you to explore these issues by reinterpreting Le Mystère de sainte Barbe over five days, a successful 15th-century play.

RE-ENACTING MEDIEVAL HEROINES TODAY, THE CASE OF BARBARA

REBELLIOUS VOICES AND BODIES

January - October 2024

As part of the MIP ArTec (Pedagogical Innovation Modules), this component of Susanna Scavello’s ArTec postdoctoral project was the subject of a public presentation at the University of Paris Nanterre (Espace Reverdy) and a performance-based review during the Rencontres ArTeC 2024 at the National Archives of France in Saint-Denis.

“This research-creation project represents an initial experimental attempt to breathe new life into Barbe, openly acknowledging the need to update the medieval plays on three levels: linguistic, dramaturgical and performative. The plays are written in verse in an archaic language that is inaccessible to a non-expert audience without mediation; the mysteries have a very particular structure, which is far from conventional and must be adapted to a contemporary format; for there to be a genuine emotional and intellectual connection with today’s audience, the use of contemporary aesthetic codes of staging is necessary.
The realisation of this project has enabled the creation of a new dramaturgy, staged before an audience, after having been tested during sessions of knowledge-sharing between the participating artists and attendees. It is both a performative revival of the medieval mysteries of Saint Barbara and a new, autonomous creative endeavour. The work fosters an active encounter between the academic world and the creative sector, with the conviction that the arts can bring concrete and real benefits to the development of a fairer society.”

Our thanks to Mario Longtin for allowing us to use the unpublished transcription of the mystery prior to the publication of the current edition by Mario Longtin, Jacques Lemaire and Léon Brun.
